IPTV, The Future of Broadcasting

As high speed broadband becomes more widely available, so does IPTV. As technologies change and merge, IPTV is becoming more mainstream in society. The number of global IPTV subscribers is expected to grow from 28 million in 2009 to 83 million in 2013.

This briefing will explain how and why people and companies are sending television programmes over IP data networks. You will discover how global television services are already available through broadband networks such as the internet and the differences between managed and over-the-top (OTT) services and service providers. You will also learn how consumers are increasing using mobile technology as a 'second screen' to interact with television. The session will include brief overviews of key technologies, current trends and hot topics for this fast paced industry as well as some demonstrations of IPTV services.

Dr. Keith Mitchell

Dr. Keith Mitchell is a Senior Technologist within BBC R&D and currently on attachement to the Mobile Platforms group within BBC Future Media. Prior to this he was a Research Fellow within the School of Computing and Communications Systems at Lancaster University. Keith also Co-founded 21media Innovations Ltd, a technology spin-out based in InfoLab21. All his R&D and product related projects (past and present) focus on investigating how best to deliver personalised and compelling user experiences within a multi-platform world.
